About the Storage Challenge

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus has over 80 potential sites for storage solutions - ranging from small industrial units to large research institutes with MW continuous energy requirements.

Harwell is looking to build its ability to support the energy transition and the challenges of reducing its carbon footprint using different types of energy storage solutions.

Here some examples of buildings in the Harwell site that require medium scale to large energy storage solutions:

Building R1*

One multi wing building. 3 – 4 Storey. Constructed in 1960’s. Reclad in last 10 years. GIA 10,828 m2. Mixed use building comprising of office space, labs, server rooms and meeting rooms.

Annual generation (KWh/year): R1a: 81,509 R1b: 91,048 R1c: 130,477 – combined potential generation of all projects = circa 400,000 kWh

Energy storage needs: The building consumes approx. 4,400,000 kWh per year
