About the Storage Challenge

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus has over 80 potential sites for storage solutions - ranging from small industrial units to large research institutes with MW continuous energy requirements.

Harwell is looking to build its ability to support the energy transition and the challenges of reducing its carbon footprint using different types of energy storage solutions.

Here some potential example of buildings in the Harwell site that require large energy storage solutions:

Building R80*

Main experimental hall. Large scale experimental equipment, with some office space and meeting rooms. 4 storey. Constructed 2008/2009. GIA 14,198m2.

Annual generation (KWh/year): 782,921

Energy storage needs: ISIS is the largest single department user on site with an approximate annual consumption of 70,000,000 kWh (2019/20) – storage could help with back up, cost reduction, demand side response etc.

South carpark (new & existing)*

large expanse of car parking, with aim to install solar car ports

Annual generation (KWh/year): combined – 1,000,000 kWh+

Energy storage needs: This will be the largest solar development in the RAL portfolio. This area would be ideally suited to large scale storage which would aid development in this part of the site.
