About us
Wiek-II BV is a wind energy project owned by the renewable energy co-operative WindpowerNijmegen located in Nijmegen-North in the Province of Gelderland. The objective of the co-operative is to contribute to the renewable energy targets in Nijmegen by co-creation of additional renewable energy capacity. The co-operative has installed 4 wind turbine generators (combined power 10 MW) and have planned to install a photovoltaic field (4,9 MW) early 2021. Ownership of the expansion is foreseen by citizens in the direct surroundings. Expansion, however, will lead to grid constraints. In order to cope with these and to optimize the co-operative’s business model they will invest in storage capacity.
The role of Wiek-II BV in the STEPS project is to provide a testbed for testing of storage technology. (Electro-)chemical batteries are taken into consideration. A total power capacity of approximately 2 MW is required. The foreseen study area in the testbed Energielandschap de Grift is a comparison of the pros and cons of varying storage capacities and storage power combinations in relation to mid-scale energy production capacity with various technologies, e.g. wind and solar.
